The 4th International Congress on Energy and Environment Engineering and Management - IVCIIEM (www.ciiem.net), wich will be held in Mérida from 25th to 27th May 2011, is organized by teachers belonging to the Areas of Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (Portugal) and the School of Industrial Engineering of the Extremadura University (Spain). This congress has the main target of joining academic, researchers, engineers, consultants and firms from the Energy and Environment Sectors, in order to interchange experiences, present advances and new projects about the rational and efficient use of Energy and the Energetic Conversion Systems, and also to analyse the different solutions focused to reduce the impact caused due to energetic systems on the environment and the environment preservation, concerning other activity sectors and society.

The 4th CIIEM has been structured into six different scientific areas, in which all the communications will be distributed depending on the following items:

Renewable Energies
Environmental Management. Environmental Engineering
Environmental Education
Materials for energy. Clean Materials.

The presentation of the papers will be made orally or by means of panels or posters. All summaries must be sent by e-mail to ciiem@estgp.pt

Therefore, those communications having enough quality (once the revision process is passed) will have the possibility of being published in International Journals.

We will also have prizes for the best works in each area, certified by our organizing committee and we will also select the best works of young researchers.

Your solution can be a new or as yet unestablished practice, business concept or technology for slowing the effects of climate change. Enter your solution into our international competition that will award the winners with publicity, customer contacts, and assistance in marketing. We are now searching for new or as yet unestablished business concepts, practices and technologies to assist municipalities and other local and regional actors to better control the effects of climate change.

Does your organisation have a solution that would

combat climate change,
support local and regional economics, employment and general well-being,
lead to concrete changes in the practices of the municipalities and their residents, and
can be broadly implemented as a successful measure?

We invite you to take part in this competition whose winners will be awarded in connection with the ‘Solutions local, together’ Conference scheduled to be held in Turku from 31 January to 2 February 2011.

The competition is targeted at different organisations, companies and municipalities, which have developed practical and functional solutions aimed at slowing the effects of climate change. The objective is to bring together solution providers and new customers within the Baltic Sea region and Nordic countries.

The competition winners will gain publicity, customer contacts, and concrete expert assistance in the marketing of their own solutions.

8th Grand Cosmic Dragon Parade

Tomasz Miklis and Maciej Łukawski were representing RES Alumni Organisation on AGH I-Day in Kraków. AGH Department of International Relations in cooperation with Erasmus Student Network AGH and other student organisations organised the International Day for the second time in Klub Studio. During the event different educational exchange opportunities were presented (Erasmus, Vulcanus, RES). Young students had a chance to talk to people who experienced international exchange programmes and get information about application criterias.

International Scientific Congress on Climate Change

The University of Copenhagen hosted an International Scientific Congress on Climate Change under the heading "Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions", 10-12 March 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The congress was organised in cooperation with nine other universities in the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).

The main aim of the congress was to provide a synthesis of existing and emerging scientific knowledge necessary in order to make intelligent societal decisions concerning application of mitigation and adaptation strategies in response to climate change.

The RES Boat Experience

The RES BOAT conference has brought together a lot of European companies and researchers in an encouraging atmosphere to support knowledge-transfer in the field of RES at European level and promoted project results of different research programmes. The symbolic event has been held between 23-27 March 2009, aboard a boat (the RES BOAT) passing through 5 countries (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Serbia) with the final event has been held in Belgrade in the geographic vicinity of Romania and Bulgaria. The voyage on the river Danube connecting nations in the enlarged EU will also bring attention to the Southeast region of Europe.

Summer School in Environmental Systems Analysis

The course provides an introduction to model-based data analysis in the environmental sciences. It covers model construction, sensitivity analysis, frequentist and Bayesian inference, and estimation of model prediction uncertainty. As prediction in the environmental sciences usually requires the combination of prior knowledge with measured data, there is an emphasis is on Bayesian techniques.
The course is targeted at researchers who are interested in analyzing their data with mathematical models. This includes PhD students, post-doctoral researchers, and senior research scientists. The course consists of lectures, practice sessions based on didactical exercises, and discussion of problems of the participants. The participants are encouraged to bring their data sets and models to start working on their own problems during the course.
The course will be very intensive to optimize the benefit of the participants.

2009 Grand competition: Climate adaptation.

The Development Marketplace is a competitive grant program administered by the World Bank. The 2009 global competition is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and additional DM partners. It aims to identify 20 to 25 innovative, early-stage projects addressing climate adaptation. The DM is a unique opportunity to turn your idea into reality; if selected your project could receive up to US$200,000 in grant funding for implementation over two years.

Competition Theme
There is now a strong consensus that climate change presents an urgent challenge to the well-being of all countries, particularly the poorest countries and the poorest people in them. Even if efforts to reduce greenhouses gas (GHG) emissions are successful, it is no longer possible to avoid some degree of global warming and climate change. [more]

The competition on climate adaptation focuses on three sub-themes:
1. Resilience of Indigenous Peoples Communities to Climate Risks [more]
2. Climate Risk Management with Multiple Benefits [more]
3. Climate Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management [more]

Who can apply? Special eligibility criteria apply to sub-theme one. For sub-themes two and three, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, foundations and development agencies based in the country of implementation may apply without additional partners. All other groups must partner with at least one organization; the type of partnership varies across types of applicants. Individuals cannot apply. First RESAO think-tank meeting in Kraków

Saturday 7th of March in Kraków first RESAO think-tank meeting was organised. A variety of issues were discussed. The CV Database project is in the development phase now. First step is to design a good cell structure for the database and then the data collection stage will proceed.
An analysis of the restaurants in Kraków for the first RES Reunion (first week of June in Kraków!) was conducted. Chlopskie Jadło and Shisha Club were selected. Look at the websites and tell us if you like those places. We will have nice official dinner in Chłopskie Jadło and then move to Shisha Club for some relaxation.

The United Nations has designated 2001-2010 as the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World" and 2005-2014 as the "United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development." Not only should young people benefit from these global initiatives, but they should be empowered to play a leading role in them. The theme of this year's International Essay Contest is "The role of science in building a better world." Young people from around the world are invited to submit their innovative ideas on this theme.

RESAO Vision

Not so long ago all of us said goodbye to each other and to the beautiful Iceland. It was an amazing time and I believe that we can continue our cooperation through the RESAO platform. This post is quite long, but please read it thoroughly to understand what’s behind the enigmatic RESAO letters.

RESAO Survey Results
Some time ago I sent you a survey. So far only NINE people replied to it. According to the results most of you consider providing us with the job and internship offers the most important task for the RESAO. I also agree to that and that’s why we need to build the CV and Experts Database (details explained below).
Another issue is the spelling of the word organisation. From the results more people like the American spelling. I personally reconsidered this because of the British English being the official language of EU and is official language of RES School. Express your opinion here.

CV Database
This is the first task we need to complete. The plan is to develop an extensive profiles of each one of us. It’s going to have all important information that the employer might need. It will be also useful for us, to involve each other in some renewable energy projects.
Next month I will sent you a Excel spreadsheet with a template to fill out. This information will be available in the password protected section of the Alumni page on www.res.is website.

Experts Database
During this year in Iceland all of us made a lot of contacts with the industry, lecturers and so on. We even meet the President and the Minister :). We are 30 (31?) students from 10 different countries. Next year there’s going to be 40 more. Each one of us has contacts at their universities, companies etc. We need to organise it and use it.
After completing the CV Database we will have an offer describing the idea behind Experts in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development Database prepared. All of you should distribute it among people you know and that are connected to the renewable energy and sustainable development sector. They will fill out a form with their contact information and area of research and all this information will be available in the password protected site of RESAO. It’s going to be a great opportunity to get job and internship offers!

RES Informational Meetings
We all benefited a lot during our stay in Iceland. I think now it’s our time to give back! The least we can do now is to promote the RES School and help with the enrolment process. Use your RES business cards, spread the good word among your friends, be the advocates of RES. Remember that we all need to preach the gospel of renewable energy and sustainable development ;).
Contact the person responsible for the RES at your University and suggest that you can give a presentation about RES and your experience in Iceland. We are organising RES informational materials (leaflets, posters, rollup etc.) that will be sent from Iceland. If you want to take an initiative at your University, please contact me and RESAO will provide you with necessary materials.

RES Boat
You all know about this event. Please let me know who will be there. It’s a great opportunity to advertise among the main European “players” in renewable energy and sustainable development sector. Martina will be our official representative there. RESAO promotional materials will be distributed there and hopefully we will get a lot of contacts. We will work on those contacts to get to the best job and internship offers. Your help is needed for the success of this!

RES Reunion ’09
Our first official reunion is scheduled at the beginning of June in Krakow. Magda is a coordinator of this event. This time will allow us to have fun at the selector festival. For more details check the website: http://www.selectorfestival.pl/.
I think it would be good to have some official part of our the Reunion. For sure a nice dinner for all of us will be organised. We could also do small presentation of our project for the public. It could attract media and some companies. Write to me about your thoughts and ideas for our first Reunion in the most beautiful city in Europe :D.

Spelling issue

One of the first problem we encountered while outlining the vision of the RESAO was the spelling of the word organisation/organization. The concept of alumni associations is an American idea and has a long tradition in the U.S. A lot of our ideas for RES Alumni were inspired by the similar projects at the main U.S. Universities. RES School have more and more student form U.S. and is basically on the border between Europe and North America.
On the other hand Iceland IS a part of Europe and British English is the official language in the European Union. All of the RES School materials (website, course catalogues, leaflets etc.) are written with British English spelling.
What's your opinion on that. Should we base our project on American model or should we be consistent with RES School British English standard?
